Vallejo is located in Solano County, California in the northern part of the east bay area; right off of San Pablo Bay. It is home to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom amusement park as well as the California Maritime Academy (a California State University). California Maritime Academy in Vallejo (a Cal State University) is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States and the only one on the west coast.
Vallejo is an old shipping town and has some of the most unique historic structures around. Most of the homes found in the Vallejo Heritage District were built in between 1860 and 1890 using elements of several styles to create ornate and distinctive combinations.
The St. Vincent’s Hill Historic District surrounding St. Vincent’s Catholic Church was a neighborhood for shipbuilders at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The homes display a wide variety of architectural styles beginning with the Greek Revival cottages of the 1850’s and 1860’s.
Today Vallejo is hailed as a very diverse, multicultural Mecca. People from all over have come to port here and their history can be felt throughout. The Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum tells the fascinating history of the City of Vallejo and the U.S. Navy at Mare Island through exhibits and programs that explore and celebrate the diverse cultures of the community.
